I lived in the beautiful State of Veracruz, Mexico from elementary through middle school. During those years I was exposed to the traditional music from Veracruz, called Son Jarocho. One of the most unusual instruments played in Son Jarocho is the Quijada de Burro (Donkey’s Jaw.) The Quijada is played with a deer’s antler. As weird as it sounds, the quijada is the perfect percussion instrument! Here‘s an example of the quijada being played in a Son Jarocho.

So I decided to do this little dude playing the quijada for the Day of the Dead.

Calaca tocando la quijada de burro.
