Artcrank Seattle 2014

July 26, 2014

Once again, I had the honor of participating in the 2014 version of the Artcrank show in Seattle. This time, the show was at the Fred Wildlife Refuge. It’s a nice space and some of the proceeds were donated to the venue.

I had a hard time designing this piece because I had other freelance gigs going on at the time and I was out of town for a few days. I honestly can say that I designed this poster at hotels, planes and layovers. It’s ok, I’m happy with the outcome.

If you are interested in buying a copy, please visit my store.

Sketchbook

March 11, 2014

I share most of my work over at my Instagram, it’s just easier and faster for me. I usually just snap a pic and in two seconds I can share it, no need to scan anything. However, I decided to scan some pages from my sketchbook  so you can get a better idea of what my sketches look like up-close.

Steamroller Smackdown 2013

October 8, 2013

We took part once again in the SVC’s Wayzgoose & Steamroller Smackdown. For those of you who don’t know what The Smackdown is, here is the skinny from the SVC’s website:

“The 12th Annual Wayzgoose will take place at the School of Visual Concepts on September 7, 2013 from 1-6pm. Come see the Letterpress Marketplace, where local printers will be selling their goods, the Letterpress Equipment Swap, hands-on demonstrations and keepsake printing in the SVC Letterpress Studio, and the Steamroller Smackdown, featuring 16 design teams competing to print the coolest poster using a giant steamroller instead of a printing press.
The Letterpress Studio at SVC has always been an intersection of historical and active practice. We are not just another program teaching a lost art; we are dedicated to preserving this craft through active engagement of the community, a de facto working museum. To that end, our inspiration for this year’s Steamroller Smackdown are the other local museums, the keepers of our cultural heritage. This year’s event will forge a link between these conservators of culture and the interpreters of culture: our illustrious design community. Our spirited design teams have been paired with a cultural muse.”

Our team was paired with the awesome EMP Music + Science Fiction Museum. If you haven’t been, you should check it out. During our visit to the EMP, two of the things that got my attention were David Bowie’s costume from Labyrinth and the mask from the Monster from the Black Lagoon. So I came up with a sketch that I think speaks to both things, the Sci-Fi and the Music. And the Bowie Creature was born. Here are some pictures from the process. If you would like to see more, you can also check out the Letterpress at SVC pool on Flickr.

Also, if you like the poster, I made a screenprinted version and it’s for sale at my store.

Han Shot First

July 30, 2012

Here is a little type treatment I did for Ten Paces and Draw. This illustration is for the character remix series. Last time I did The Bride from Kill Bill. This time the theme was Star Wars, the character I chose was Han Solo. This is my rendition of the  biggest controversy of all regarding Han Solo. The truth is HAN SHOT FIRST. Period. By the way, I was not alone on this one, the other three illustrators picked the exact same phrase! Totally different styles! Here is mine, along with the initial sketch. Also, if you try really really hard you can kinda see something in the smoke.

Dime Jaguar

June 28, 2012

I’ve been busy this past few weeks. This is a poster I did for a project called Ilustrando Para in Monterrey, Mexico. It is a yearly show that features illustrators, designers and visual artists paying tribute to iconic musicians by interpreting their songs in the form of an illustration. This year, the band chosen was Caifanes, one of the most important bands from Mexico, and one of my favorites as well. This year’s show is called Haremos Historia(We’ll make History) after one of the band’s songs.

On top of being a cool show, Haremos Historia, Ilustrando Para Caifanes will donate the proceeds of the poster sales to a charity that treats children with autism.

The song I got was Dime Jaguar (Tell Me Jaguar) which is not technically a Caifanes song, but a Jaguares one. Jaguares is a band that formed after Caifanes broke up back in the 90’s featuring some of the members of Caifanes.

Here is my initial sketch. As you can see, the idea is basically the same, but the execution changed quite a bit. I like the sketch too, but I decided to go a little bigger on the waves and add more detail to the Jaguar.

#YoSoy132

June 24, 2012

I designed this poster to support the #YoSoy132 movement in Mexico. The idea is that people will use it as they please. It is free to use. Many posters have been popping up around the country, so I decided to make one too. You can check out some here, my friend Emiliano has some in there too, his poster was one of the firsts if not the first poster in support of the movement.

If you want to download a Hi-Res version of the poster, you can do so here.

The theme for this past week’s Ten Paces and Draw swap was Patterns. I had a chance to create a pattern based on my good friend Jeff Wilkson‘s sketch.

Nautical

January 20, 2012

Here’s my illo for this wee’s theme at Ten Paces & Draw. I have to say, I was kinda scared of this one because when I got the sketch, I wasn’t sure if it was a depiction of an actual story or something. I gave it a try anyways. The sketch was done by rad illustrator Yasmeen Ismail. Hope you like it.
